Under the leadership of PV Narasimha Rao, Dr Singh served as the finance minister from 1991 to 1996, during which he gained worldly recognition for his economic policy.
During his tenure, the economist played a key role in the liberalisation of the Indian economy, which allowed it to speed up development dramatically.
Under his leadership, India recorded its highest GDP growth of 9 per cent and became the second fastest-growing major economy.
Along with making waves in the economic sector, Dr Singh also made major strides in the health and education sectors by introducing the National Rural Health Mission and the Right to Education Act.
Long after his time as Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh was spotted at the Rajya Sabha in August 2023, where he arrived on a wheelchair to cast his vote for the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
Praising his predecessor, PM Modi lauded Dr Singh in his farewell speech for guiding the house and the country.
"Dr Manmohan Singh ji came to Parliament in a wheelchair. How conscious he is of his responsibilities, not only this, I was watching, whenever committee elections were held, he came to vote, the question is not to whom he came to give strength, I believe, to give strength to democracy," said Modi. Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha in 2023 after a 33-year tenure.
Dr Singh is survived by his wife Mrs. Gursharan Kaur and three daughters - Upinder Singh, Daman Singh and Amrit Singh.
